Coaching Sub Junior 5 for 2023:  Saskia Zappia

Just like Starlets, Sub-Junior 5 is about having fun, trying some new moves and playing with some new friends. Each new child is welcome to trial a class to see if it is for them, obligation free.

What is the training commitment

Our Sub-Junior 5 team trains during Term 1, 2, 3 and 4, and get to showcase their efforts to family and friends on four occasions during this time.  Participants learn five routines during the four terms, and work is choreographed for the entire team to take part, no matter the skill level.  Click here to see some of the routines and dance styles taught in our classes.

What do we need for training?

  • Some stretchy clothes (ideally a black leotard for girls, bike shorts and t-shirt for boys) plus close fitting layers for cooler months.
  • A water bottle
  • A small, healthy snack
  • Any medication if required (such as Asthma inhaler, epipen etc)
  • A training 'aesthetic' skirt (girls) or cape (boys), which can be purchased through the club shop.

Do I have to buy costumes?

No, all the performance costumes are included in the term fees.  There is no additional sewing required, although if you are handy with a needle, perhaps you might like to volunteer to assist occasionally with minor sewing repairs.  This actually makes Calisthenics one of the most cost effective performance sports in WA.

When can I see my child perform?

Our Sub-Junior 5 group takes part in four performances during terms 1, 2 and 3.  They are:

  • Taste of the Stage (or TOTS) - held in May.  This is a very low-key concert, designed to help our younger members feel comfortable on stage, and allow parents to view the theatre (both front and back-stage) where all our calisthenics concerts and competitions are held.

  • Betty Fitzpatrick Competition - held in late July/early August (date to be confirmed), which is our first competition for the year against other clubs in Perth.  The children perform in full costume, and girls have their hair in a bun, with some light makeup.  The emphasis is on having fun and getting to show off what has been learnt during the first two terms.

  • State Competition - held in late August/early September (date to be confirmed).  Once again, the children perform in full costume with hair and light makeup done.  Again, we compete against other clubs in Perth, but the emphasis remains on doing our best, and having fun with the team.

  • Family Concert - held in August is our showcase of all the age ranges participating at our club, and is a wonderful opportunity for the Sub-Junior 5 participants to see their coaches and cadets performing in their beautiful costumes (date TBA).

Parents are also welcome to stay and watch classes, which gives them a chance to meet other parents.

Who are the coaches?

Our coaches are fully trained, having completed many years of calisthenics training, skill assessments and our state association training workshops.  Coaches also have to work under a more experienced coach and be assessed by a senior coach prior to taking on a team alone. They all have current Working with Children Checks and a current First Aid certificate.  Coaches may physically assist a child into a correct position, but this is never done with force, and never without a child's agreement.

Our cadets are usually younger members of the Calisthenics club community, who are still participating and are interested in working with younger teams, and perhaps with a view to becoming a coach one day.  These young ladies are aged between 13 - 17 and volunteer their time to act as a cadet at class.  Our cadet program provides those interested with skill based examinations, as well as cadet workshops to ensure that the children in their care are treated appropriately.

Do I need to volunteer?

We understand that life can be very hectic at times.  However, as we are a not-for-profit, community sporting club, we very much rely on each and every family donating a few hours of their time during the course of the year.  The jobs to be done are many and varied.  With everyone helping out a little, it means that we can keep the costs down for this amazing dance sport.

Parents will be rostered to sit at class for a whole training, no more than once a term.  The Parent Roster is organised by the Team Manager at the start of each term, and if you have other commitments on your rostered day, please make arrangements to swap with another parent.  For this reason, contact numbers are provided with the roster.  The parent on roster provides support for the coaches and cadets, assisting with minor first aid such as a band aid or ice pack, marking the attendance sheet (with assistance from Team Manager or cadets).  It also gives the parent time to view a full training, and see how your child is going.

How much does it cost?

Term fees are set at the end of each year, for the following calendar year.  These fees are worked out as an annual amount, which is then invoiced in three equal portions in term 1, 2 and 3.

For Sub Junior 5, participants will be required to pay the following:

  • Calisthenics Association of WA Affiliation (Competing) of $To Be Confirmed for the year.  This covers insurances, music licenses and performing at the purpose built Calisthenics Theatre in Midvale.
  • Applecross Calisthenics Club training fees which include the hire of four costumes, coaching and hall hire, competition fees, and the purchase of one 'fancy' costume which your child will keep at the end of the year.
  • Purchase of a training aesthetic skirt or cape (prices from $35-45). These can be used over a number of years.
  • Purchase of a competition pack (approx $18) with personal items required to compete.
